I had a discussion with one the admission committee members of one the top business schools on what they are actually looking for in a candidate. His response actually confirms my belief. Adcom members receive quite a lot of applications from qualified candidates each year. The truth is that most applicants seem to be qualified and always belong to the same pool. So, how do you stand out from this pool of qualified applicants? Use your application essays to focus on your strengths.

Your application essays are your marketing tools. If you are involved in community development projects or one form of activity outside your work place, use your essays to talk about them. Be as real as possible. There is no point talking about what you do not do (the adcom has a way of getting to know this). You might ask a friend that knows you well to help you review your essays (I did this and it paid off). This will make sure that you do talk about what you are not in the essay.

There are many applicants whose GMAT score is higher than yours, they finished with higher GPA than you did and even have more work experience than you currently possess. So, use your essays to sell yourself well. That is your main contact point with the adcom beyond your CV.

With the growing global market, business schools are anxiously reaching out to overseas candidates gradualling filling the increased need for people with an international education. Applicants around the world are also hearing the call. According to the Graduate Management Admission Council, last year nearly 40% of those who took the GMAT were from outside the US, while 85% sent their scores to US business schools. If you are an international student like me who have dreams of earning a business degree in the US, then keep reading.

Business schools in the US and all across the globe actively recruit overseas candidates. Most schools now send representatives to MBA events in different countries. I will tell you that MBA fairs provide the greatest benefit to the prospective students. I can still remember the experience I had when I attended the Harvard Business School MBA fair in my country. This fair will definitely give you an opportunity to meet with representatives from business schools all around the world as well as alumni and, in some cases, current students depending on what time of year it is.

MBA fair provides you with an opportunity to collect a great deal of information from the programs, as well as speak to the representatives and get a sense of what the expectations of different schools are of their candidates. You will also speak to individuals who may have gone through those particular programs and get a sense of what those individuals’ experiences are. In general, it’s just a great opportunity for candidates to gather as much information in one setting as possible.

You also need to make sure you have an understanding of the US educational system and the style of education. Some business schools require you to participate in projects in class and at the same time express your ideas even if you don’t agree with the professor. If you are non-native English speakers, communicating in English can be another challenge. With heavy reading material and active class discussions, building a solid foundation of English is essential.

With the events of 9/11, getting visas becomes more challenging. So, every international student needs to have an understanding of US immigration policies and leave yourself plenty of time to apply for that visa. This is one of the reasons I would encourage international students to apply as early as possible. This will make you to get a decision as early as possible, and then make your own decision about what program you are going to pursue so that you can move through the process as quickly and efficiently as possible.

So what’s left after you’ve gone through that painstaking process of applying and finally getting accepted to a US business school? Pack your bags and move as soon as you can. Move to the location where your MBA program is located as early as possible.

The past few days has been revealing. I am definitely grateful to GOD for this short break.
This leave has been an eye opening experience. It gave me the opportunity to really look within and re-cast the vision of my life. Looking through the events of my life in the past few months, I can boldly say now that I have a better understanding of the assignment at hand. So, watch out as events of my life unfold in the next few weeks. I am on a JOURNEY…

As a rule, I would suggest that you apply as early as possible. This will definitely increase your chance in most business schools as many schools have very few spots available for the third round of admissions.

Some schools make available the numbers of applicants they accept per round. You may want to inquire into such statistics to help you determine when is the best time to complete your applications.

If you submitted your applications last year to MBA programs and were not accepted at the schools you wanted to attend, this is a great opportunity for you to apply again. In fact, re-applicants tend to have a better chance of admittance to B-School than first time applicants. But in order to reapply successfully, you will have to reconsider how you want to present yourself to the admissions committee.

The best way to increase your chances of success is to improve your application. This could mean diversifying your work experience or preparing for and retaking the GMAT, a very important factor in MBA admissions, or it could mean choosing different individuals to write recommendations for you. If you applied late the first time, applying again and early significantly increases your likelihood of admittance.
